New Routes Unite Canadian Communities - East & West - Commencing end of June/early July 2025

WestJet has announced a major expansion of its domestic network with new non-stop service between Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) and three Canadian cities for summer 2025. The expansion includes all-new non-stop service from Saskatoon and Regina and the return of flying between Vancouver and Halifax. In addition, new flights between Winnipeg and St. John’s have been added to the extensive summer schedule. WestJet is also increasing frequency on its popular Halifax routes from Winnipeg and Edmonton, as well as between Calgary and Deer Lake.  These new additions fulfill a demand for more direct connections to Canada's East Coast.

New and Returning Routes:

Winnipeg – St. John’s (2x weekly, starting July 1)

Vancouver – Halifax (4x weekly, starting July 1)

Saskatoon – Halifax (1x weekly, starting June 28)

Regina – Halifax (1x weekly, starting June 29) 

Increased Frequencies:

 Winnipeg – Halifax: 10x weekly (43% increase)

Edmonton – Halifax: 13x weekly (8% increase)

Calgary – Deer Lake: 3x weekly (50% increase)

Airport News

Construction is underway at the Calgary International Airport Domestic Terminal building to consolidate all domestic security checkpoints into one centralized screening process. The updated infrastructure will eliminate the need to remove laptops, and permitted liquids, aerosols and gels from carry-on bags, making the screening process faster, more efficient and convenient.

The Calgary Airport Authority says they will bring three separate screening checkpoints into one consolidated location that will move people through faster and allow us to meet and exceed expected passenger growth.

Passengers flying to domestic destinations on all airlines from YYC will travel through the new centralized screening area, scheduled to open to the public by the end of 2025 with seven preboarding security lanes.  Current capacity for screening will be fully maintained during construction, so passengers won’t experience project-related delays during travel in 2025.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority's (CATSA's) CT X-ray technology which Calgary is implementing is also now available on one screening line at Toronto Pearson (YYZ) Terminal 1 International checkpoint, with more to come this year.

The new piece of 3D X-ray technology allows liquids, aerosols and gels to remain packed away during screening, as long as they don't exceed the 100-ml limit. Medical devices and other large electronics — including laptops — can stay in the carry-on bags as well.

The new machines have been rolled out earlier this year with Montreal and Ottawa among the other airports to receive them. 

With this new equipment, travellers will be able to move through security screening in a faster, more efficient way which will create a smoother journey.
